Open position for the Optics Group


LNLS has an open position for the Optics Group, which provides expert support in optical design of synchrotron beamlines and metrology of X-ray optics for beamlines of the new Brazilian synchrotron light source, Sirius.

As a member of the Optics Group you will characterize X-ray optics surface quality. You as self-motivated candidate further develop and optimize the instruments and procedures to push the measurement precision beyond the current state-of-the-art.

Permanent Position – Technological Development Analyst – Reference Nr. 144170

Your activities will include:

  • Operate computer-controlled metrology instruments (including Fizeau- and micro- interferometers, and slope measuring profilers) to measure the surface topography of X-ray optics
  • Set up and align the X-ray optics on each instrument
  • Use scientific and technical knowledge to understand and implement data analysis and mathematical software (Python)
  • Write higher level control software (Labview) to operate and synchronize scientific instruments (including high precision mechanics, sensors, lasers etc.)
  • Continuous development of the instruments or it’s parts and continuous optimization of the measurement procedure and software, aiming for higher precision of height and slope errors of the measured optical surface
  • Elaborate technical documentation of the measurement results and procedure, and of software and hardware developments
  • Installation support at the beamline


  • University degree in Physics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics or related disciplines
  • Minimum of 1-year relevant work experience in laboratory environment

Profile, Skills and Experience – Required

  • Experience with interferometry-based instruments
  • Extensive programming experience in Python
  • Experience with supervisory software (Labview)
  • Experience with hardware of high precision motion, scientific instruments and CCD/CMOS Cameras
  • Good interpersonal, communication and presentational skills
  • Ability to interact with staff and external collaborators at all levels
  • Ability and initiative to get to the heart of the problem and take it effectively through to completion
  • Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Good organizational and planning skills
  • Self-motivation
  • Fluent in both oral and written English

Profile, Skills and Experience – Desired

  • Strong mathematical background
  • Experience of working in a metrology laboratory / cleanroom environment
  • Knowledge of visible light and / or X-ray optic testing, and handling of delicate optics
  • Good knowledge of the Portuguese language would be advantageous

Work conditions

  • 200 hours monthly work, from Monday to Friday
