On June 29, 2019, the Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM) held the fourth edition of its open day called “Ciência Aberta” (Open Science). Students, families and children of all ages participated in guided visits through the National Laboratories, hands-on activities, informal lectures by researchers, among other attractions.

This year, the new Brazilian synchrotron light source, Sirius, was open for public visitation, which included booths and exhibitions covering several aspects of such complex machine, from design to scientific applications.

Ciência Aberta registered a record audience, gathering around 16 thousand people, in addition to the more than 550 volunteers – all employees, interns and students of the Center. The entrance was free of charge, with the option of donating food or personal care products to social welfare institutions in the Campinas region, which resulted in 2.6 metric tons of products collected.

The event was supported by the companies Racional Engenharia, Rockwell Automation, Aché, Barbanera Qualitá, Bosch, Cisco and Phytobios.
